The AMEP can help you to learn English. It provides up to 510 hours of free English lessons and childcare to newly-arrived eligible migrants, refugees and humanitarian entrants.

Lessons

Certificate II in Spoken and Written English is a post-beginner course for students who have developed a basic level of English, literacy or numeracy skills and who have had some formal or informal exposure to English.

The course is primarily for newly arrived migrants and refugees who need to develop language skills to participate in a range of community and initial work contexts.

You will learn speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

Study options

  • full-time or part-time classes during the day, evening or Saturdays
  • at home with a tutor
  • on the computer with self-paced e-modules
  • by distance education

Childcare

Childcare can be arranged while you attend classes. Free childcare is available for children under school age.

Certification

Students can obtain a 10363NAT Certificate II in Spoken and Written English or Statements of Attainment for modules of the Certificate.

The Certificate II in Spoken and Written English is recognised throughout Australia.

You may be eligible for free English lessons under the AMEP if you:

  • are a newly arrived migrant, refugee or humanitarian entrant from overseas
  • are at least 18 years old
  • have a less than functional level of English
  • arrived in Australia after 1 July 1991
  • are a temporary resident who holds a gazetted visa
  • have been granted permanent residence in Australia since 1 January 1998
  • are aged between 16 and 18 years and unable to attend English classes at school

Take your passport to an AMEP teaching centre. Your visa and passport tell us if you are eligible.

You must register for the AMEP within six (6) months of your visa commencement date or arrival in Australia.
