Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) - CSWE I - AMES

The AMEP can help you to learn English. It provides up to 510 hours of free English lessons and childcare to newly-arrived eligible migrants, refugees and humanitarian entrants. 

 

 

Lessons

You will learn English, from beginner to intermediate level, to help you settle successfully in Australia. You will also learn about Australian society, culture, customs and working in Australia.

You will learn speaking, listening, reading and writing skills - for everyday living, for work and for further study.

Study options

  • full-time or part-time classes during the day, evening or Saturdays
  • at home with a tutor
  • on the computer with self-paced e-modules
  • by distance education


Childcare

Childcare can be arranged while you attend classes. Free childcare is available for children under school age.

Info  for volunteer  English tutors

Training allows you to work as a volunteer tutor with migrants and refugees who are unable to attend formal classes. Home tutors help their students learn basic language skills and adjust to life in Australia by tutoring for one to two hours per week. The training course is free of charge and is conducted by The Smith Family.

Certification

Students can obtain a 10362NAT Certificate I in Spoken and Written English or Statements of Attainment for modules of the Certificate.

The Certificate I in Spoken and Written English is recognised throughout Australia.

You may be eligible for free English lessons under the AMEP if you:

  • are a newly arrived migrant, refugee or humanitarian entrant from overseas
  • are at least 18 years old
  • have a less than functional level of English
  • arrived in Australia after 1 July 1991
  • are a temporary resident who holds a gazetted visa
  • have been granted permanent residence in Australia since 1 January 1998
  • are aged between 16 and 18 years and unable to attend English classes at school


Take your passport to an AMEP teaching centre. Your visa and passport tell us if you are eligible. 

You must register for the AMEP within six (6) months of your visa commencement date or arrival in Australia.
