You may be eligible for free English lessons under the AMEP if
you:
- are a newly arrived migrant, refugee or humanitarian entrant
from overseas
- are at least 18 years old
- have a less than functional level of English
- arrived in Australia after 1 July 1991
- are a temporary resident who holds a gazetted visa
- have been granted permanent residence in Australia since 1
January 1998
- are aged between 16 and 18 years and unable to attend English
classes at school
Take your passport to an AMEP teaching centre. Your visa and
passport tell us if you are eligible.

The NSW Department of Education and Communities (DEC) runs the
Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) in over 70 teaching locations
across the state and via the home tutor scheme.
The DEC Consortia delivers AMEP services on behalf of the
Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The AMEP is a
Commonwealth Government program. For more information about
